Google wipes off View Image button from search; making downloading much harder

As the view image button opened the photo in a new screen making it easier to download or screenshot, removing the button may decrease photo theft. "They are created to strike a balance between serving user needs and publisher concerns, both stakeholders we value". If you wanted to see the rest of the website, you had to use another option, "Visit Site". It meant you could click an image in the stream, then click the button to see the image full size without having to load anything else. Photographers and publishers too were pushing for Google to adopt measures that would make unauthorized downloading of copyrighted images that bit harder. Earlier this week, Google and Getty Images announced a partnership and Getty withdrew its charges against Google. It made viewing an image easier & simpler.

Miyashita continues: "Getty Images believes that images have the power to move the world by spurring action and driving change". Instead, the new options that appear next to the images are - visit, share and save.

Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, will today file a competition law complaint against Google Inc. with the European Commission.

The tech giant attributes the decision, at least partially, to a recent deal it made with Getty Images, a highly prominent American stock photo company. The "View Image" extension should now be installed which can be verified by looking at the new icon in the Chrome taskbar.

We're generally wary of recommending brand new extensions for Chrome or other browsers, but Butt has published the extension as an open source project on GitHub, and it appears to be free of the adware that's been gradually infecting popular free extensions for the a year ago or so.

The view image feature was a convenient way for users to quickly find the image they're searching for without opening the website. However, the Reverse image search feature still works, which is available in the search bar of Google and you can easily track the image source by uploading it or by simply dragging it to the search bar.
