Could Toys R Us be about to close a further 200 stores?

Bankrupt retailer Toys R Us is planning to close 200 more stores and make staff cuts at its corporate headquarters in Wayne, N.J., according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. It also said that store managers were recently required to tell hourly workers that "there are no severance benefits being provided for the store-closing process". The company had around 11,150 full-time workers and 21,300 part-timers.

Toys R Us announced in January that Upstate New York stores in Amherst, Greece, Glens Falls, Henrietta and Kingston would close. Its remaining Louisiana locations are in Metairie, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Bossier City, Monroe and Lake Charles.

According to USA Today, Toys R Us will hold a meeting on Thursday at its headquarters in New Jersey. At that point, it had about 1,600 stores around the world, 800 of those in the United States.

Toys R Us has struggled in recent years, as budget retailers like Walmart and e-commerce giants like Amazon have begun selling more toys at greater discounts.

The Journal cites a subpar holiday season as one of the main reasons behind the additional closings.
