Norwich Airport reopens following major disruption caused by snow

The UK is now under siege from a barrage of snow and freezing temperatures which has caused travel chaos across the nation.

British Airways has pulled the pin on at lease 91 flights today, with majority at London Heathrow.

At Leeds Bradford airport Flybe and Ryanair have each cancelled eight flights.

The airport's twitter reads: "Our runway is now closed with an estimated opening time of 2pm".

Jet 2 has tweeted, "We are now advising travel as normal, and would notify our customers should there be any updates".

De-icing of aircraft and snow clearing is now taking place and the airport says additional staff are on site to assist.

Further snow is forecast during the day which will make travel conditions to and from the airport extremely challenging.

An airport spokesman said: "For now, our priority remains our passengers and our staff".

"Due to the severe weather conditions and restrictions and potential closures at some airports we fly to and from, we have been forced to cancel and merge some of our flights on Thursday and Friday to ensure that we protect the rest of our schedule", the airline said in a statement.

Travellers should keep an eye on the website after 3pm to see if it has re-opened.

"We continue to work closely with Marketing Edinburgh and the city's hoteliers to find accommodation for any stranded passengers".

"We apologise for the inconvenience that the adverse weather has caused to passengers".

Passengers are advised NOT to head to the airport if they are booked with these carriers - which also include Turkish, KLM, Aer Lingus and Air France.

Their Twitter account reads: "UPDATE 09:45- due to ongoing snow, the runway is closed".

Rail passengers across Britain suffered from delays and cancellations on Wednesday, with nearly all operators affected by the conditions.
