NRA official: Trump supports 'strong due process'

U.S. President Donald Trump held another school safety meeting Thursday, continuing his push for gun control legislation in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at a Florida high school.

President Donald Trump has invited a bipartisan group of lawmakers to the White House to discuss school safety and possible gun legislation.

During the Wednesday meeting Trump also said he's going to target bump stocks-a gun accessory that modifies a rifle's firing rate-through an executive order.

The US President asked the lawmakers to pass bills created to expand background checks for gun buyers, and to increase the minimum age at which some firearms may be purchased. He encouraged them to pass a comprehensive bill that would raise the age limit for purchasing guns from 18 to 21, something the NRA has said it opposes.

"You know why? Because you're afraid of the NRA", Trump responded before pointing and laughing. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who are pushing their bill - which failed twice in the Senate after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting - to broaden background checks.

As the meeting went on Trump again seemed to suggest the government could ignore due process rights when confiscating weapons. GQ named Hicks 'the most powerful person in Trump's Washington' last week, calling her the president's most trusted aide.

"We're going to come up with some ideas", he said.

On Capitol Hill, House Speaker Paul Ryan is showing showed little interest in stricter gun control proposals being floated in Congress. "We should be focusing on making sure that citizens who should not get guns in the first place don't get those guns".

Something must be done: Donald Trump has called on USA lawmakers to "go big" on legislation to prevent more school shootings.

He also warned lawmakers against proposing a bill that included concealed carry across the USA, a provision that Republicans and the NRA have aimed to include in any gun legislation.

Trump's call for stronger background checks, which are popular among Americans, has been resisted by Republicans in Congress and the NRA. "Don't be shy", Trump said. "A lot of times by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures".

The president also urged the Republicans not to bother incorporating the legislation passed in the House of Representatives last as it would never pass. "I don't need it", he said. "It would be so lovely to have one bill that everyone could support", he said.

At the White House, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, one of two Democrats to address Trump publicly, expressed his concerns over the idea of arming teachers as a response to the school shootings.

The confessed gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, legally obtained the AR-15 rifle allegedly used in the attack that left 17 students and faculty dead and more than a dozen others wounded. Early in conversations with lawmakers over the legal status of young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children, the president expressed a desire to pursue comprehensive immigration reform and even said he'd be willing to "take the heat" from his supporters if Congress made a decision to act.

Mr Trump's comments were at odds with his history as a candidate and President who has declared his love for the Second Amendment, on the right to bear arms, and the NRA, which gave his campaign US$30 million (S$40 million).

On Wednesday he criticized federal officials for considering changes to gun laws that are "incremental at best".

"The president really could make the difference", Toomey told "Fox and Friends", contending that Republican senators previously opposed are reconsidering their positions.
