Debate over Lamar Jackson brings up same old tropes about Black quarterbacks

In his three years at Louisville, Jackson caught a grand total of zero passes for zero yards.

Jackson, who is using his mother as his manager and will not hire an agent, said he would offer a "no thank you" to teams requesting he work out at wide receiver.

"No teams have asked me to play wide receiver", a smiling Jackson said.

The justification for such a ridiculous assertion was that Jackson came from a simple offense and his slight build make ideally suited as a receiver, a position he's never played in his life.

"Was I surprised they asked Lamar Jackson changing positions?" For now, though, he's focused on the present, and that involves convincing National Football League teams that he's the best quarterback on the board.

But all these old tropes and codes about Jackson not "making reads", not "having the size", or being a "run first" quarterback are all so fucking familiar and dumb.

People also like to harp on Jackson's completion percentage. His accuracy is a question. He was an electrifying dual-threat quarterback, throwing for 7,203 yards and rushing for 3,172 yards over his final two seasons.

"I'm not going to their team, if anything", Jackson said during an entertaining 15-minute press conference in which he was playful, friendly and loose, but also unwavering in his belief in himself. "Then bowl game and that happens and I was kinda hurt dang that [expletive] happened to me, things happen".

Lamar Jackson: "It's insane, I thought I was a pretty good quarterback in college".

As the NFL Draft approaches, Jackson has taken center stage here at the NFL Combine.

The Ravens are expected to select a quarterback at some point to play behind Joe Flacco, so it's possible they could end up with Jackson.

"No wildcat. This is not the Dolphins with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams", he said eliciting laughs. "Very mobile, I can throw on the run, [can make the throw to] any part of the field, any route". "I have a lot of learning to do - I'm just ready". "I like to see a guy with that kind of passion", Elway said. "He's going to be taking a bit cut of my paycheck that I feel I deserve it right now!" I love putting the ball in receiver's hands.

Pressed further if he thought the position switch talk was disrespectful, Jackson didn't hold back.
