Google celebrates The festival of Holi with A doodle

The Google Doodle by Amrita Marino depicts this joyous occasion with red, yellow, blue and green.

While the Bengali community dominated the Dol (spring festival similar to Holi) celebrations on Thursday, it was the turn of the non-Bengali communities (predominantly Marwaris, Gujratis and Biharis) to splash colour on one another to soak in the Holi spirit on Friday. These traditional drummers move from house to house, adding a peppy, musical touch to the day's festivities. Delhi Police said it had made proper arrangements in case of any hooliganism during the celebrations, requesting the people to obey rules for safe celebration and stay away from drunken driving.

Holi also marks the culmination of a 10-day-long annual festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy temple.

Vrindavan also happens to be one of the most famous places in India for celebrating Holi.

The colour festival starts on the evening of March 1 and ends on the evening of March 2.

A national holiday, it takes place on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month, which is usually March. Following her brother's instruction Holika who had a boon from the god that fire would not harm her sat on a fire by taking Prahlad on her lap, but was burnt to death while Prahalad remained unhurt due to the blessing of God Bishnu.

Vishnu - the preserver and protector of the universe - saved Prahlad and killed Holika instead.

During the first part of the festival, known as Holika Dahan, bonfires are lit to commemorate Holika's death and celebrate good conquering evil. It's believed that this is where the custom of smearing loved ones with color during Holi came from.
