Washington state has passed laws protecting net neutrality

Backstory: Late previous year, the Federal Communications Commission voted to reverse Obama-era rules that sought to democratize the Internet.

Washington became the first state in the nation to require internet service be "net neutral" as Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bipartisan bill Monday afternoon. OR actually passed a similar state legislation protecting net neutrality earlier in 2018. T he FCC voted in December to gut federal rules that meant to prevent broadband companies such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon from exercising more control over what people watch and see on the internet. "It's allowed the free flow of information and ideas in one of the greatest demonstrations of free speech in our history". The difference is that Washington's law will put new requirements on ISPs, and that violations will be enforceable thanks to the state's Consumer Protection Act.

"We feel very confident in our position", Inslee said.

Your internet service should be free of slow lanes and corporate favoritism if legislation just signed in Washington state and awaiting the governor's signature in OR works as intended. It's unclear when Oregon's measure would be signed into law. Attorneys general in almost two dozen states, joined by public interest groups and internet companies, have sued to overturn the repeal. There are also efforts by Democrats to undo the move in Congress. It will prohibit them from impairing - or throttling - internet traffic based on the content internet users consume, or the apps, services and devices they use.

All of this didn't go well with proponents of net neutrality who argue that the repeal with open the floodgates for throttling competing services, prioritize pay-for-play streamers, and other general shenanigans that will make the Internet a less equal place to be in for smaller guys. Washington's measure will take effect mid-June.

Ron Main, executive director of the Broadband Communications Association of Washington, which opposed the bill, said the cable companies his group represents have already pledged not to block legal content or engage in paid prioritization. Under a nonprofit called the Coalition for Internet Openness, the companies said they filed a petition with the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit today requesting the court review the FCC's decision.

"There should not be a state-by-state patchwork of differing laws and regulations", he said in a written statement.
