Amazon is aware that Alexa is scaring people with seemingly random laughter

Reports of the issue on social media date back as far as February 22.

Alexa is programmed in many voice-activated devices with a preset laugh, which can be prompted by asking: 'Alexa, how do you laugh?'

It's not the first creepy encounter users have had with Alexa.

Alexa's laugh isn't the only thing that's freaking out users.

Twitter and Reddit users have been reporting this alarming, "witch-like" cackle coming from their devices - sometimes unprompted or as a freakish response to requests to turn off the lights.

Still, having more services on voice assistants is only a good move, and puts greater competition on the couple already there.

"I was trying to turn off some lights and they kept turning back on". The laugh doesn't sound like the machine-voice Alexa has, it sounds like an actual human female. Users can simply say, "Alexa, play Flow", to launch the personalized playlist.

If it's possible to describe laughter, this one sounds slightly sarcastic, as if the person laughing was trying to convey that they didn't really find whatever they'd just heard amusing. "I still get chills".

Other users noted that the laughter occurred at inopportune times and was sometimes preceded by the device's unwillingness to perform requested tasks. Others reported hearing the laughter when they were home alone in the dark. Based on the reports, it doesn't seem to happen at any particular time or after any particular event.
