Snow storm pounds US Northeast, closing schools, snarling commutes

It was less than a week ago that a major storm brought damaging winds and flooding rain to much of the northeastern part of the United States.

The second winter storm in a week continued to dump wet, heavy snow on New England on Thursday, forcing schools to close, leaving more than 1 million customers without power and snarling the morning commute across the U.S. Northeast.

"I encourage New Yorkers to stay at home or seek shelter if experiencing a loss of power", New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said late Wednesday, as he announced plans to double the number of National Guard troops deployed in the region.

The wind knocked gobs of slush and snow off buildings and trees in Philadelphia and NY, forcing pedestrians to watch out.

The storm is expected to pack wind gusts of 30 to 50 miles per hour.

About 20-30cm of wet, heavy snow, some of it accompanied by thunder and lightning, were forecast for New York City and surrounding New Jersey and CT suburbs through Thursday morning.

The governors of New Jersey and Pennsylvania declared states of emergency, giving them access to support from the US government if needed.

A teacher was struck by lightning while holding an umbrella on bus duty outside a school in Manchester Township, New Jersey, police said.

The heavy snow was expected to continue into the evening with gusty winds at times, potentially bringing power outages and downed trees.

Boston public schools along with dozens of schools throughout New England cancelled classes on Thursday as local officials and forecasters warned commuters of whiteout conditions and slick roads.

Police in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, said the man's vehicle hit the wire, sparking a fire that engulfed the auto at about 9 a.m. Thursday, The Associated Press reported.

It happened around 5 p.m. on Hillside Avenue. Philadelphia International Airport recorded about 6 inches, while New York City's Central Park saw less than 3 inches.

The heaviest snow was expected in ME, where up to 18 inches was possible.

Intense bands of snow whipped parts of the Northeast on Wednesday, threatening risky driving conditions and more power outages as the second nor'easter in a week crept up the storm-weary East Coast. At least nine people died from Friday's storm. As many as 2 million people were left without power, some some of whom only got it back Tuesday. Eversource, an electric utility serving Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, said it could take several days to restore power for everyone due partly to the challenge of clearing storm debris and repairing damage.

Davis, her husband and 2-year-old son toughed it out in the cold house until Sunday with blankets, layers, flashlights and lanterns.

Are you ready for yet another big coastal storm?

Another New Rochelle resident, Com Crocker, was also without power when Friday's storm left downed power lines in his yard and a massive tree on the front of his auto.

Crocker said he is also "pretty concerned" about the new storm but is grateful the massive tree missed his house. "We do everything we can to stay open and provide that service", said Jim MacNeill, the restaurant's general manager.
