Warner accepts level two charge by ICC, handed three demerit points

Cape Town - The International Cricket Council (ICC) have charged both Australia's David Warner and South Africa's Quinton de Kock after their stairwell confrontation at tea on the fourth day of the first Test at Kingsmead.

Warner was hit with a level-two charge of bringing the game into disrepute, and de Kock a level one, under the players' code of conduct.

David Warner has received the emphatic backing of Australia coach Darren Lehmann, who says the opening batsman will continue as vice-captain following his spat with Quinton de Kock.

In a video posted on Cricket Australia's website, Lehmann said he continued to back Warner as the team's vice-captain as the Australians hunt a 2-0 series lead.

Former South African skipper Graeme Smith agreed it was not good for cricket, but suggested Warner only had himself to blame in an online reply to Gilchrist.

The South African camp retorted that whatever was said was payback for Warner's own aggressive sledging of De Kock and other Proteas players out on the field.

Ex-Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist refused to take sides in regards to both incidents, but admitted that they tarnish the image of cricket to those who may not know much about the sport.

"We're certainly supporting David".

"We like to make them feel uncomfortable out there, but we don't cross the line and bring people's wives and family into it".

It is alleged that De Kock made utterances about Warner's spouse, Candice, which prompted an emotional response by Warner as the players made their way into their respective changing rooms. "Both sides are going to push the boundaries".

"Dave is at his best as a cricketer when he is in the face of oppositions, he is very good at getting under their skin and it's been clear in the first Test that he has been able to do that", Paine said. "It's a bloody tough game out there".

However, reports indicate that the Australians also got personal with De Kock.

If it was four he would be banned from the second Test starting on Friday.

"I'm sure the captains will chat and the coaches will chat and we'll get away to play the game", he added.

"We spoke about cricket stuff and a few little things with his fitness".

Crowe has already finalised a punishment for one misbehaving Australian in Durban, fining Nathan Lyon 15 per cent of his match fee for his "ball drop" send-off of AB de Villiers.

"That's how it should be as grown men".

"It was probably a bit cheeky. He sent him a text, spoke to him today and it's dealt with", Lehmann said.
