Winter Storm Update from DESPP/DEMHS

ACCUWEATHER FORECASTTHURSDAY: Brisk and chilly with intervals of clouds and sunshine.

The higher totals are expected to the north and west of the city. With the winter storm warning extended about half of the state is under a warning with the other half, to the south and east, under a winter weather advisory, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy, wet snow and gusting winds could take down trees and snap power lines already weakened from last week's storm, adding to stress for customers who have gone days without power. Dane County and areas to the north and west have received 4-6 inches generally, with locally heavier amounts showing up closer to La Crosse.

Thousands of people are without power Thursday morning as a nor'easter continues to bear down on the state. That should be changing significantly later.

Snow will continue to fall as much as an inch an hour before tapering off in most areas later in the morning. As of 3:15 p.m Eastern, NWS was predicting that the heaviest areas of snow might be seen in the interior northeast of MA on Wednesday into early Thursday morning, with snowfall rates of two to three inches an hour during the Wednesday evening commute.

Damaging winds are in the forecast with gusts of up to 60 mph at Cape Cod, 45 mph at the Jersey shore and 30 mph around suburban Philadelphia. Heavy, wet snow and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour are likely, which could lead to more downed trees and scattered power outages in some areas.

Depending on the storm's track, communities along the Interstate 95 corridor could see either lots of rain, heavy snow, or a mix of each. These areas will likely be all snow as well, but some mixing could occur in the CT river valley where warm air will persist.

Just days after a potent storm hammered the Northeast and New England, yet another nor'easter will dump up to 18 inches of snow from Pennsylvania to ME into Thursday. In Richmond, an overnight parking ban was announced Wednesday afternoon.

Many schools said they'd determine whether there would be classes Thursday on Wednesday night.

It will be a little chilly for early March with highs in the upper 30s.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. High: 40s.

"We will make adjustments to our snow forecast throughout the day in E MA & RI so stay tuned for latest updates", forecasters with the NWS wrote on social media Wednesday morning.

A less intense and more progressive low, along with lower astronomical tides, should prevent coastal flooding from reaching the levels we saw during Winter Storm Riley. Extreme southern NJ and southern DE may just get rain.

The cool pattern looks to remain indefinitely through at least the first half of next week.
