Mamata Banerjee declares support for Congress candidate for Rajya Sabha

Mamata Banerjee declares support for Congress candidate for Rajya Sabha

"Under the given circumstances all the regional parties should unite to put pressure on the BJP", she said.

Birbhum Trinamul leader Anubrata Mondal said on Saturday that Mamata had offered him a Rajya Sabha seat but he declined and told her that he would "quit" the party if the nomination was thrust on him.

Mr Singhvi later said, "Whichever part or place you belong to, the arithmatic, history and geography of this state politically shows a huge anti-BJP commonality".

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee announced yesterday that her party will support Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi's candidature for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from West Bengal.

Speaking to the media on the Assembly premises, he said: "I am thankful to Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for supporting my candidature".

On Friday, Left Front too announced CPI (M) state secretariat member, Rabin Deb as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls. "Earlier, Trinamool Congress had supported Pradip Bhattacharya in Rajya Sabha polls". But, Banerjee has made a decision to extend support to Congress itself and back Singhvi, This is surprising as Congress have been contesting Bengal polls as allies of the Left, which are the biggest political rivals for TMC.

Mr. Singhvi has represented the West Bengal government in the Narada scam and also when the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung approached the Supreme Court over cases lodged against him by the State government. "I thank the ruling party here and its chief Mamata Banerjee".

Singhvi said he was happy to be nominated from the land of Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Rammohan Roy and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

"I do not sense any Opposition at our party-level", the Congress nominee said.

On her dinner invitation to opposition leaders next week, she said: "We try to have regular meetings with like-minded parties to see if we can work together".
