President Trump's Military Parade Will Not Go Full Authoritarian

The parade will be merged with the existing Veteran's Day Parade.

Military vehicles will roll through Washington on November 11 in a salute to veterans, a Pentagon memo said Friday, detailing President Donald Trump's dream of hosting a military parade. And formations donning "period uniforms" may be utilized to "represent veterans from previous wars", the letter said. Some of those considerations included preventing the parade, which will likely integrate with Washington D.C.'s holiday parade, from featuring tanks and noting that it should include "a heavy air component ... to include older aircraft as available".

It will correspond with Washington's annual Veterans Day parade and focus on the contributions of USA veterans "from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 to today, with an emphasis on the price of freedom", according to the memo. Trump should be surrounded in the reviewing area at the Capitol by veterans and Medal of Honor recipients, the memo said.

The idea came to him after attending the Bastille Day celebration previous year with French President Emmanuel Macron. But the idea was met with criticism from members of both parties who expressed dismay that such a show of force is more reminiscent of authoritarian regimes.

"We'll send them up to the White House for a decision", about the cost of the parade and the resources that would be diverted to make it happen.

The Joint Staff will be responsible for planning the parade and Northern Command, which oversees US troops in North America, will be responsible for executing it, according to the memo, which was signed by US Navy Capt. Hallock Mohler Jr., the executive secretary for the office of the secretary of defense.

Trump has sought a military-style parade since attending a Bastille Day parade in Paris with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron.

Trump was inspired by the Bastille Day Parade in France and called on the Pentagon to come up with an American parade.

During a press briefing at the White House in February, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said, "I think we're all aware, in this country, of the President's affection and respect for the military".
