Man's severed leg used as pillow, probe ordered

The Uttar Pradesh government is now investigating the hospital and action will be taken against those found responsible.

This is the shocking moment a man used his own left FOOT as a pillow after it was amputated following a bus crash. Two doctors were also suspended by the administration.

The 25-year-old works as an employee on a school bus that overturned while trying to avoid colliding with a tractor Saturday.

Ghanshyam's family said that they had brought a pillow with them to the hospital but that a doctor had used it to prop up Ghanshyam's leg, then took the amputated leg and used it as a pillow for his head.

Chief Medical Superintendent, Harish Chandra Arya, said: "It is not yet clear who made a decision to use the amputated leg to rest Ghanshyam's head".

"When we reached the hospital, we saw his leg being used as a headrest", Janaki Prasad, a relative, told NDTV.

'I repeatedly asked the doctors to intervene but they refused.

Under the bio medical waste (management and handling) rules 2016, notified by the government's ministry of environment, forest and climate change, on March 28, 2016, the severed leg should have been put in a "Yellow Box" meant for amputated human organs, the Commission said.

Relatives of Ghanshyam Singh have alleged that doctors were the ones to place the foot under his head as a pillow. "The amputated leg, once detached from the body, could also be a reason for any kind of infection to the patient and others who were present in the hospital ward", it added.

Medical negligence is not uncommon in government run hospitals as these do not have proper equipment or face staffing and hygiene issues. In another incident reported last month, a quack was arrested for using a common needle on a syringe and infecting 46 people with HIV.
