Marcus Smart To Have Thumb Surgery, Could Return During Playoffs

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart will undergo surgery on his right thumb to fix a torn ligament, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Celtics got some bad news Friday. It appears that he'll miss the rest of the season, but the Boston Celtics hope that he'll be able to return at some point in the postseason.

Smart is the Celtics' best defender and will obviously be missed.

Per Woj, there is hope that Smart can return in six weeks, which would mean he'd be available for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The injury occurred when Smart dove for a steal against Indiana Sunday (a game the Pacers won 99-97). Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge acknowledged surgery could be an option for the fourth-year guard, but said Smart would take a few days to see how the injury responds to treatment.

In late January, Smart suffered a cut to his right hand as the result of a self-inflicted injury.

He will be a restricted free agent in the summer and it's unclear if Boston will look to tie him down to a long-term deal. That injury came after Smart punched a picture frame in his hotel room following a frustrating loss to the Lakers.

But Smart returned February 23 and had played quite well since then.
