Huawei's P20 Pro has three rear cameras… and a notch

Taking on the Samsung Galaxy S9 series, Huawei today announced two flagship devices- the Huawei P20 and the Huawei P20 Pro at a special event in Paris. The event begins at 3 PM CEST, which is around 6:30 PM in India. The world's third-largest smartphone maker will be live streaming the event through its official YouTube channel.

All that said, the Huawei P10 should cost you a lot less to pick up at this point, so if money is a factor then it's still worth considering - and we'd suggest waiting for our full review of the Huawei P20 before opting for the new phone anyway, as specs don't always tell the whole story. Unlike the Apple iPhone X, the P20's display notch does not contain dedicated facial scanning hardware. Today, the top position of the ranking has changed hands once again with the launch of Huawei P20 and P20 Pro which seemed to leave a good impression among the folks at the renowned image lab.

There's already plenty of smartphones on the market that include dual-lens camera systems but Huawei is upping the ante with its P20 Pro getting three rear snappers. Don't expect to find the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS in the USA, at least officially; like the P20 Pro and P20 it's intended for Europe, really. In layman's terms for the extra money you will get, AMOLED display; a triple rear camera setup; IP67 water resistance; and a bigger 4000mAh battery. At the time, the innovation pointed the way toward in-display fingerprint sensor technology, which was widely anticipated to be the big mobile innovation of 2017. Huawei is debuting "Master Stabilisation", which uses the AI smarts of the Kiri 970 chip inside to ensure you get steady photos and video.

The P20 Pro sports a new camera interface that is easier to switch between camera modes.

For optics, this phone is packed with Leica 12 MP RGB sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 20 MP monochrome sensor with f/1.6 aperture with dual-LED flash, PDAF, Depth auto focus and 4K video recording at 30fps capability. With that being said, the Huawei P20 comes with the company's homegrown Kirin 970 SoC running the show that's paired with 4 GB RAM. It's available in two configurations, 6GB RAM and 256GB storage for €1,695 or 6GB RAM and 512GB storage for €2,095. The secondary shooter directly beneath is a 20MP monochrome shooter like on the P20.

The P20 Pro has a unique camera system with triple cameras which utilises AI to enable even the most novice of photographers to take better quality pictures. It's powered by a 3000mAh battery, and it runs EMUI 8.0 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo.

What really makes the headlines for this device, though, is the camera array. Not only it has three cameras, but the camera sensors also have a very high resolution. The new phone will be available from 28 March for Euro 649, followed by a P20 Pro from 16 April for Euro 899. It arrives in black, Midnight Blue, and two gradient colors called Twilight and Pink Gold. The P20 Pro's highly sensitive image sensor captures low light photos with up to ISO 102400.
