Synthetic Pot In Illinois Causing Severe Bleeding From Eyes And Ears

"Despite the perception that synthetic cannabinoids are safe and a legal alternative to marijuana, many are illegal and can cause severe illness", IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah said in a statement earlier this week. Additional cases have been reported across the state.

Since 2015 hundreds of people across the USA have overdosed and been hospitalized after smoking too much or bad batches of synthetic cannabis. Their symptoms included blood in the urine, severe bloody noses, bleeding gums, coughing up blood or blood coming from the eyes and ears.

Though synthetic pot has always been considered risky, severe bleeding is not a known side effect, said Dr. Melissa Millewich, an emergency room physician at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The update comes forward when six people face severe bleeding after using the synthetic cannabinoids. It is also updated that these synthetic cannabinoids are not only a single drug but it is made by using hundreds of chemicals and then sold freely to the people.

Anyone who starts experiencing symptoms, including severe bleeding or bruising, should be taken to the hospital immediately, the IDPH said. They can be smoked or sold as liquids for vaporizers and e-cigarettes. These chemicals are called cannabinoids because they act on the same brain cell receptors as the main active ingredient in marijuana.

Millewich added that a change in the formula used in the drug could be behind the bleeding, but because health officials don't know the exact makeup of the products, exactly what's causing the bleeding is unclear.

Shah says they're unsafe because it's hard to know what chemicals they contain or what an individual's reaction will be. "If you have purchased this product, do not use it".

As of Thursday, the Illinois Department of Public Health had received reports of 22 hospitalizations related to the outbreak since March 7. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found the use of fake weed can increase risky and violent behaviors, particularly among teens.
