Prince Philip in hospital

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip will undergo hip surgery on Wednesday and has been admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London ahead of his operation, according to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.

The prince announced in May that he was retiring from most public duties after decades of royal service.

At a ceremony commemorating Britain's war dead in November, he appeared to be having trouble standing and leaned against a wall.

Philip's surgery comes after he was forced to miss out on numerous events over the Easter period due to problems with his hip.

Prince Philip was admitted at King Edward VII Hospital in central London earlier in the day.

Prince Philip has missed several public events in recent weeks, including an Easter church service in Windsor.

"One of the reasons that Prince Harry has wanted this wedding to happen quite quickly - this is really whirlwind by royal standards - is because his 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, is retired now and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding", Nicholl said.

His last solo appearance was seen in August 2017, when he reviewed the Royal Marines outside Buckingham Palace. It said the hospital admission and surgery were planned.

When it was announced past year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and he had the full support of the Queen.

"He is someone who doesn't take easily to compliments, but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years", the notoriously private royal revealed in her speech at the people's banquet.
