Danny Welbeck brace enough for Arsenal to see off lowly Southampton

In Arsenal's defense, Arsene Wenger had made seven changed from the side that played so well against CSKA Moscow, but it wasn't an impressive start.

Southampton looked set to capitalise on Arsenal's experimental selection when Long, who had scored just once in 46 games, beat defender Shkodran Mustafi to a Cedric Soares cross to the near post and caressed the ball past goalkeeper Petr Cech. They had been level for eight minutes when Dusan Tadic allowed Alex Iwobi to cross for Welbeck, who had just produced a contender for miss of the season, to rise above Cédric Soares and head home Arsenal's victor.

Saints' Jack Stephens and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny were then both sent-off as Southampton's frustration boiled over in the closing stages as they remain three points adrift of safety.

But Welbeck got the victor with a powerful downward header ten minutes before the end to bag the win for Arsenal, in a game which saw late dismissals for Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny.

Southampton are three points behind 17th placed Crystal Palace but with a game in hand. Long is not the most prolific but he showed a poacher's instinct in opening the scoring with his second goal of the Premier League campaign, and his willingness to run the channels was vital against opponents who dominated possession. They hold a 4-1 advantage from the first leg of the quarter-final. I know when I get the opportunities in front of goal, I will put them away - apart from the one I put over!

- Arsenal have won six matches in a row in all competitions for the first time since May 2017 (also six).

In other Premier League matchday 33 clash Manchester United defeated rivals Man City 2 - 3 at the Etihad, Liverpool played a goalless draw with Everton. Long turned in Højbjerg's wayward shot, only for the flag to go up for offside.

Another England World Cup hopeful was heavily involved as the injury-ravaged Welbeck netted his first league goals since September.

"I thought there'd be another opportunity to get a goal and get the victor".

We have gone through a hard spell, but because the players are proud we came back.

"Southampton were leading, they came back to 2-2, and every time I believe we have shown great spirit, even if at the end of the game it was a bit hectic", said Wenger.
