Why Florida's Senate Race Could Become the Most Expensive in History

He also did not mention the Republican majority that controls the U.S. House and Senate.

The millionaire businessman turned two-term governor says he's running for the US Senate because career politicians have created gridlock in the federal government. His recent focus has been on the Everglades and harmful water releases from Lake Okeechobee to the coasts.

Campaigning as a Tea Party hardliner in 2010, Scott talked about slashing state spending and implementing tough new laws to crack down on immigration. A Quinnipiac University poll of Florida voters in late February found that Trump had only a 42 percent approval rating.

"Almost 1.5 million jobs, $10 billion in tax reductions, over $9 billion in debt reductions in this state", Scott said.

Nelson is Florida's only statewide elected Democrat. Scott's Senate announcement came on the eighth anniversary of starting his initial bid for governor. People ask me that a bunch of times, about 'Are you this or are you that?' No. Scott's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how much money had been raised so far.

Anticipating Scott's entry into the race, Democrats have spent months readying their attacks on his two terms in Tallahassee.

Scott's challenge is bad news for Democrats, who are defending nine other Senate seats in states that Trump won in 2016.

"I admit that Washington is horribly dysfunctional", said Scott in scripted remarks made available ahead of his announcement in Orlando.

So it didn't surprise political observers that Scott used some of his first comments about his Senate run to try to distance himself from the president. The National Republican Senate Committee followed with an ad bashing all Democrats, including Nelson, for voting against the tax-cut bill previous year. Nelson said Scott has not done enough - he wants universal background checks and a ban on certain types of semi-automatic rifles. Critics say one of his misses was environmental issues along with Medicaid. "That's not what I call jobs", said Lyte-Johnson, the president of the Democratic Women's Club of West Orange County. She also highlights the deaths of 14 seniors in a nursing home during Hurricane Irma a year ago as well as accused Scott of deflecting blame for the Parkland shooting in February and the Florida International University bridge collapse that killed six people in March.

Retired Winter Garden teacher Vivian Lyte-Johnson, 71, stood outside Scott's campaign kickoff event with a sign slamming Scott as a "do nothing" Republican.
