Investigation launched into Michael Goolaerts' death during Paris-Roubaix

Michael Goolaerts became a professional rider in 2014 at the age of 20 and Sunday marked his first appearance at the renowned Paris-Roubaix race.

"I avoided crashes, and, actually, I feel less exhausted than the previous years", said Sagan, the first rider since Frenchman Bernard Hinault to win here as a world champion.

Michael Goolaerts has died at the age of 23 after an incident during the Paris-Roubaix classic.

Goolaerts' team said the 23-year-old died in a Lille hospital where he had been taken by helicopter from the one-day classic on Sunday. He was soon attended by a medical team and seemed to receive CPR. We kindly ask to refrain from speculation as we wait for an update on his situation. "Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and teammates".

It is his second win in the "monuments" - cycling's five most prestigious one-day races - following his Tour of Flanders victory in 2016.

In sunny and warm conditions in northern France, the triple world champion, who rides for Bora-Hansgrohe, broke clear of the main pack in pursuit of the three riders who remained from the group of nine that had taken an early lead with 200km remaining.

Terpstra dropped his rivals in the final kilometres to finish alone in third place.

"It's really nice to win this race with the world champion jersey".

Britain's Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe both retired after crashing on the first cobbled section of the race.

The 257-kilometer race is also known as the "Hell of the North" because of its treacherous profile including 54.5 kilometers of cobblestones spread over 29 sectors. In 2017, almost half of the riders did not make it to the finish in the Roubaix Velodrome.
