IPL matches could be moved out of Chennai over security concerns

The Chennai team played its first home match yesterday against the Kolkata Knight Riders amid tight security.

Committee of Administrator (CoA) Vinod Rai said the prevailing conditions had led the BCCI to have others options ready.

Following that ugly incident, reports are coming that rest of the matches which are scheduled to be played in Chennai will be shifted to another venue.

Four alternative locations - Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune and Rajkot - have been identified, he added.

The protestors were demanding that the IPL matches not be held when a more pressing matter - the Centre's failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) - was at the fore.

Even in their previous game against Mumbai Indians, CSK were on the verge of defeat before Dwayne Bravo launched a sensational counter-attack to single-handedly win the match for his team.

Tuesday's (April 10) thrilling match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was held despite massive protests in Chennai.

Shane Watson contributed 42 from 19 balls including three boundaries and three sixes to kick-start Chennai's innings, claiming 2-39 with the ball and becoming the holder of the Purple Cap for the most wickets in this year's IPL - his tally rising to four after two matches. One of the shoes landed near the feet of CSK player Ravindra Jadeja, who was fielding at long-on, in the eighth over of the first innings.

Thiruvananthapuram MP and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor too said on Wednesday the matches would be played at Thiruvananthapuram's Sports Hub if the BCCI made a decision to shift the venue to Kerala.

When you chase a target of over 200, you need a fast start.

Violent protests on Tuesday ahead of the match saw clashes between police and protesters, mostly belonging to fringe political parties in Tamil Nadu. Security issues seem to have forced the BCCI to take the matches out of Chennai. Naam Tamizhar leader and film personality Seeman, film-maker Bharathirajaa and scores of activists were taken into custody by police, who had a tough time managing the surging number of protesters.

Visakhapatnam's Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy stadium hosted matches over the previous editions of the IPL, where the fans were treated to some high-voltage matches and got the chance to witness their favourite superstars live in action.
