Bevin: Teachers left children vulnerable

He expressed how appalled he was that people "discarded what's truly best for children", claiming that there were people who knew so many children were home and "took advantage of that". He added that he guaranteed a child was "physically assaulted or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them".

Over 10,000 teachers and supporters gathered in Frankfort to call for higher education funding and protest recent changes to state worker pension benefits signed into law by Bevin. The Tea Party Republican Friday evening blasted teachers statewide for going to the capitol to protest a lack of classroom and pension funding.

New teachers will also enter into a cash-balance plan, which is "less generous than traditional pensions but more reliable than 401 (k)-style plans", according to Daniel Desroches of the Lexington Herald-Leader. "And it limits the impact of sick leave payments on retirement benefits to the amount of sick leave accrued as of December 31, 2018".

Over 30 school districts closed on Friday because of the teachers' protests.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin made some pretty shocking remarks yesterday when asked about ongoing teacher rallies.

In a speech from the Senate floor, Hazard Republican Sen. Lastly, lawmakers overrode the governor's veto of a bill that phases in increases in pension contributions by local governments and school districts.

"This budget does do some good things", he said.

In rejecting the increase, Bevin said it would not generate enough money to cover new state spending.

"We have time to do this correctly. Crickets", Bevin wrote from his official account.

On March 30, there was a "sick-out" (when teachers called in sick) against the pension reform bill. He will be fined $1,000.

The House voted 57-40 to override the veto of the tax and revenue bill. "What this tax bill really does, it raises 436 million dollars in taxes from the people who can least afford to pay for it", argued Jones.

UPDATE: 4:18 p.m.

The veto puts Republican lawmakers in a tough position, asking them to vote a second time on a tax increase in an election year. The budget passed the House with a vote of 66-27.

The increase is possible because of a more than $480 million tax increase approved in a separate bill.

Matt Bevin says children were left vulnerable to harm, sexual assault and drugs as a result of public school closures throughout the state Friday to allow teachers and supporters to protest at the state's Capitol.

The Senate later voted 26 to 12 to override the funding veto.

A senator who didn't vote to override the veto of HB 200 was Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville.

Lawmakers are also considering whether to override Bevin's veto of the state budget bill ahead of a deadline Saturday night. Is he resorting to these disgusting comments because the legislature overrode his veto?

"The funding needs to be staying in our public education system and we can not afford a charter school experiment with all these other financial threats in our state and in our Commonwealth", said Adelmann.
