Gmail is testing sending confidential emails that automatically expire

A new snooze feature also lets you temporarily remove emails from your inbox until a certain time, so you can avoid certain email threads until you're ready to reply.

Further, Gmail will also ask the recipient to punch in an SMS passcode in order to confirm their identity, before the recipient is being allowed to see the email. The design will feature elements of Google's Material design. It is still not clear whether the Gmail service users will be able to send the confidential/self-destructing emails to the other email platforms or not.

As the name suggests, the tool will help users who want to be extra cautious about how their emails are accessed. Gmail will let users configure expiration date for expiring mails such as a week, month, multiple years, and more. As the Google's I/O developer conference starts on May 8th this year, this new Gmail design will be an important part of the event.

This "confidential mode" will be available around the time that Google launches the Gmail redesign, which will reportedly be within the next few weeks. Recipients will then receive an e-mail that requires them to click a link and input their Google credentials to view the e-mail.

TechCrunch also pointed out that when a ProtonMail user sends an expiring message to another ProtonMail user, the email looks like a regular email in the box.

The Gmail overhaul, apart from a complete redesign, will also pack a handful of modern features you usually find on third-party clients. When it expires, it is automatically deleted from the inbox and the sender's inbox. Unless protection is offered against the incredibly simple process of taking a screenshot of any supposedly confidential mail, the whole feature might well be useless, and will simply protect against inbox searches post the expiry of the email. TechCrunch's report notes that a confidential message doesn't have to be encrypted, which means that it's likely that Google can still see the content of the email.
