Media React to Real Madrid's Dramatic Champions League Win over Juventus

Having overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit at Real's Bernabeu stadium on Wednesday, Juve were cruelly knocked out by a soft penalty converted by Cristiano Ronaldo in stoppage time of the quarter-final second leg.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, sent off for his furious protests over the decision, bitterly criticised referee Michael Oliver immediately after the match, saying he was out of his depth and should have been in the stands eating crisps.

The injury time penalty ensured the tie ended with fitting drama, Ronaldo beating substitute keeper Szczesny from the spot after Buffon was sent off when his protests at the spot-kick became too heated for referee Oliver. "Lucas [Vazquez] was brought down from behind and if they don't give him the penalty, it's a goal", Ronaldo added.

Real, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Roma are through to the semi-finals of the tournament, with the draw therefor taking place on Friday.

"The Champions League is unforgiving and you have to be focused for the entire match", Vazquez said.

Real Madrid have qualified to the semifinals of the Uefa Champions League for the 7th time running beating Juventus to do so after the two legs. Mario Mandzukic scored the first after just two minutes, heading home Sami Khedira's deft lofted pass, and the Croatian doubled Juventus's advantage on 38 minutes, this time powering home Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross with his head.

Zidane was asked about his thoughts on the penalty incident, to which he responded, "It was a penalty, they've told me it was a penalty". He then changed his appraisal of the penalty to "more than controversial" a couple of hours later.

"It wasn't an issue of VAR, because the referee still needs to have courage and a conscience", said the 33-year-old.

"I don't think that he deserves to go out in this way, but there's no going back on it now". We kept the door shut at the back and played very well tonight - we did really well to turn it around. "I knew it would be a decisive penalty, thank God I scored and we went through". "We had the chances to score, not so much in the second half, but we still have players capable of changing a game".
