Mecca Masjid Dargah acquittals point to a disturbing trend

In Malegaon blasts case, this was exactly what the former prosecutor Rohini Salian had said when she alleged that she had been asked to "go soft" against the accused. In the bomb blast that took place inside the Mecca Masjid in the old city of Hyderabad in 2007, eight people were killed and more than 55 injured. Investigation is continuing against two others.

He is still facing trial and is now out on bail in the Samjhauta blast case which is also nearing completion.

After initial investigation by the local police, the case was transferred to CBI, which filed a chargesheet.

Aseemanand has already been acquitted in the Ajmer Sharif Dargah blast case previous year due to lack of evidence.

NIA seems to have done a complete turnaround in pursuing these cases after the BJP led NDA government came to power. Two among the accused were absconding and while one another has died during the probe. While the NIA was formed in 2009, it was only in 2011 that the Centre chose to shift these cases to the NIA after the arrest of Aseemanand from Haridwar on November 19, 2010, and his purported judicial confession revealing that right-wing terror groups were responsible for Ajmer, Mecca Masjid, Malegaon and Samjhauta Express blasts between 2006 and 2008. Swami Aseemanand, a saffron-robed monk who has been linked to three terror attacks, was among five men acquitted today in the 2007 blast in Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid. The BJP demanded an apology from the Congress, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, for "defaming Hindus" while the Opposition party, in turn, questioned the impartiality of the National Investigation Agency under the Modi government.

Expressing disappointment over the acquittal of all accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case, Mohammad Irfan, a witness said justice was both delayed and denied.

A resident of Gujarat and head of the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Aseemanand was formerly associated with the RSS. According to Sharma, the court after examining documents and material placed on record found that the charges did not stick. Aseemanand allegedly retracted the statement later. "On 12 June, he approached me for the second time and said I would no longer be appearing in the case", Salian was quoted as saying in June 2015.

The court, Sharma said, held that the confessional statement of Aseemanand was not voluntary.
