ASOIF Fire & Blood history book inbound, Winds of Winter delayed again

With each successive book of the popular A Song of Ice and Fire series, fans have had to wait longer and longer.

On his blog, Martin revealed that one of the many projects he's been working on instead of The Winds of Winter (which also includes some potential Game of Thrones spinoffs), Fire & Blood, will come out this year.

George R.R. Martin announced Wednesday that a new book from the world of "Game of Thrones" will be released this year, but it's not "The Winds of Winter" - the sixth chapter that fans have been not so patiently awaiting.

Luckily, fans will still be able to venture into Westeros for Fire & Blood, which tells the history of the Targaryen kings of Westeros.

Bantam Spectra and HarperCollins Voyager will release the Fire & Blood hardcover on November 20.

"No, winter is not coming ... not in 2018, at least", Martin said.

As for the reason why all of this is so frustrating for many people, we imagine that it begins with book purists wanting to see the end of Martin's original vision long before seeing it play out on HBO.

The "Ice and Fire" novels have sold millions of copies and are the basis for HBO's "Game of Thrones".

But here's worse news: Since Game of Thrones' final season won't air on HBO until next year, this means fans will have to be completely without any new material on the world of Westeros in any medium for an entire year. I do want to stress... indeed, I want to shout... that Fire and Blood is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never meant to be... let's call this one 'imaginary history' instead....

Mixed within the 989 pages will be various illustrations, but Martin promises it won't be anything like a coffee table book with too many pictures.

First, fans now know not to expect Winds of Winter before 2019 at the earliest, which is hardly a surprise to those used to Martin taking his own sweet time to write these thousand-page tomes.

"The only answer I can give is... ah, well, no one is sure yet, and anyway, I am not allowed to say".
