District 20 cancels classes on Friday

District 20 cancels classes on Friday

The announcement notes that in Colorado, the state funds education at an average of $2,500 per student less than the national average, and is even lower in northeastern plains school districts.

State legislators in Colorado proposed a bill April 20 that prohibits school districts from supporting a teacher strike and would require districts to dock teachers' pay for each day they participate in a strike.

Senate Bill 264 was introduced on Friday and comes amid a broader conversation across the state about education funding and educator pay, and as teachers gear up later this week for a second round of demonstrations at the Capitol.

By law, it's considered a misdemeanor if a state employee goes on a strike and as far as voicing discontent, Gardner says teachers union in Colorado is vocal.

Mike Johnston, a Democrat eyeing the gubernatorial seat in 2018, has spoken out against the bill, calling it a "tactic created to distract from the challenges facing Colorado's education system rather than solving them". It would also allow a school district the ability to fire a teacher if they violate a court order prohibiting a strike. "As Governor, I will make sure that teachers are heard, not thrown in jail for exercising their rights", Johnston said in a statement sent to Denver7.

"It certainly is about funding our schools and ensuring our students have the resources they need", Amie Baca-Oehlert said.

The district says the canceled school day won't have to be made up and won't impact the last day of school.

Teachers from the Poudre School District, Cherry Creek Schools, Adams 12 Five Star, Denver Public Schools and St. Vrain Valley will walk out that day.

We now know there will be excessive levels of absences throughout our district. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, and Rep. Paul Lundeen, R-Monument, will get its first hearing.
