French President Blasts Trump's Policies in Address to US Congress

"That is why we can not say we should get rid of it like that", Macron said in his joint address to the US Congress.

He defended major global agreements that President Trump has shunned, including the Paris Climate Agreement and Iran nuclear deal. Macron and Trump have quickly developed an affability that the USA leader hasn't displayed toward other key allies.

Macron told Congress that Iran will "never" be allowed to develop atomic weapons, as the fate of a landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran hangs in the balance.

Lawmakers from both chambers cheered robustly as Macron praised America's history of multilateralism, saying Europe and the United States must together face the "new threats and challenges" of the 21st century.

However, the bulk of Mr Macron's speech pushed against the US President's messages of isolationism and nationalism. This is an option.

'We are living in a time of anger and fear.'

. It will not douse, but inflame, the fears of our citizens. "We decided with President Donald Trump to work on a new comprehensive deal". "It is a critical moment".

Macron has developed a strong relationship with Trump at a time when many European leaders are keeping a distance.

More broadly, the free world needed to "push aside" the forces of "isolationism, withdrawal and nationalism", Macron said, and to "shape our common answers to the global threats that we are facing" with an updated multilateralism, lest the post-World War II institutions that "you built", including the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, be destroyed.

Macron later told French reporters he has no "inside information" on Trump's decision on the Iran deal but noted that it was clear the U.S. president "is not very much eager to defend it".

"What is the meaning of our life, really, if we work and live destroying the planet, sacrificing the future of our children?" he asked as the room erupted, mostly among Democratic members of Congress, in applause.

Trump had tweeted earlier on Wednesday that he was, "Looking forward to watching President Macron of France address a Joint Session of Congress today".

Speaking of the tilt towards trade protectionism that Washington has been increasingly interested in, Macron defended globalization against nationalism.

"Legitimate concerns" should be dealt with by negotiating within the World Trade Organization, he said. "We're going to see what happens on the 12th".

"Commercial war is not the proper answer to this evolution", he said.

The French President will address a joint meeting of Congress Wednesday, arguing in favor of the agreement.

Mattis in the past has said he believes the agreement is flawed but that the United States should stick with it.

"We wrote these rules", he said.

Macron said that changes in U.S. policies on several world issues might work in short term but were "very insane in the medium and long term".

Iran negotiated the agreement - providing for curbs on its nuclear program in return for relief from numerous sanctions weighing on its economy - with China, France, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S. in 2015.

But the Iran deal was the centerpiece of this week's talks.

He called for respect for the sovereignty of Iran and its ancient civilisation, and urged the west not to "repeat past mistakes", an apparent reference to the 2003 Iraq invasion. "Let us not create new walls ourselves on the other side", Macron said.

"If you stop the day after our victory against ISIS, you leave the floor to the Iranians", he said he'd told Trump. Macon has a history with the USA, having served as a Young Leader with the French-American Foundation in 2012.

"My view is... that he will get rid of this deal on his own, for domestic reasons", Mr Macron said at the end of a three-day state visit to the US.

"We do not always agree on the solutions", Macron said of climate change.
