Japanese engineers create huge robot that can transform into real sports vehicle

Brave Robotics, a Tokyo-based robotics company founded in 2014, just announced the development of J-deite Ride, a 12-foot (3.7m) tall, 1.6 ton (1.45 tonne) robot that can transform into a working auto in just over a minute.

A vehicle that transforms into a four-meter-tall robot has come to life - and no, it doesn't hail from the Transformers homeworld of Cybertron but right here on planet Earth.

However, before sci-fi fans picture a future where good robots battle the bad guys, it should be noted that J-Diete Ride is only a little faster than a snail, taking one hour to cover 300 feet when walking.

It's the culmination of a project that began fifteen years ago and has gone through several smaller permutations.

The robot was developed by J-deite Ride LLP, Asratec Corp, and BRAVE ROBOTICS.

Its developers have predicted the technology will be benefit amusement park and the entertainment industry.

Brave Robotics is not the first to develop a transformers-esque vehicle.

Inventor Kenji Ishida, CEO of Brave Robotics, was inspired by anime movies of transforming robots and deciding to try to create one in real life.

Some people may view the robot as an "expensive toy", but it was meant to inspire others, Ishida said.

So far they've kept their giant robot confined to the factory floor, but they'll show it off in public in Japan during a May racetrack event.

It's creators eye the more sedate pace in amusement parks or parades around the world.

The Turkish Letrons project already produced a prototype transforming auto that made an appearance at the Japanese premiere of Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight film previous year. In November, J-deite Ride is scheduled to make its US debut in Florida at the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2018.
