Lydia Ko Wins First Event In 2 Years After Near Albatross

Australia's Minjee Lee shares the lead with New Zealand's former world No.1 Lydia Ko late in the final round of the LPGA Tour event in San Francisco.

Angel Yin, Shanshan Feng, Charley Hull and Jessica Korda, who started the day one stroke behind Ko, the 54-hole leader, tied for third at eight-under-par 280.

The New Zealander, who turned 21 earlier this week, watched as Lee made her own spectacular birdie on the par-five decider, then calmly knocked in her 70cm eagle try for her first win in 44 tournaments.

Her emotion was hard to hide after what has been a challenging period in her already incredible career.

"It's a huge relief because people are like, hey, because of this you're not winning, because of that you're not winning", said Ko.

"It's insane because I was three-over for the day at one point", Ko said.

To her credit, Lee scrambled to make a superb birdie, forcing Ko to hole out for the win, which she duly accomplished, leading to an outpowering of emotions after what has been a comparatively challenging period for a player whose ascent was once limitless.

An eagle on the first play off hole saw the Kiwi lift her first title since July 2016.

"It's disappointing that I couldn't do better on the back nine".

The victory is Ko's first since the 2016 Marathon Classic and her third career win at Lake Merced Golf Club, where she is a member.

Her chip from off the green at No. 18 in regulation kissed the edge of the cup, and she tapped in for birdie to complete a one-under 71 and force the play-off as she joined Lee (68) in the clubhouse on 12-under 276. "Every part that would have occurred went the precise method for me".

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has climbed five spots in world rankings after her drought-breaking victory on the LPGA Tour yesterday.

"I was able to put my game together on the back nine and when that putt dropped, oh my gosh".

"But you know it was emotional because (my family have) been through it with me, it's not like you're the only one out there".

"But just to have a two-and-a-half foot putt to win the event is a pretty good feeling, but also nerve-wracking".
