Breast Cancer scandal: 270 woman died after NHS computer error denied screenings

It's estimated that between 135 and 270 women had their lives shortened as a result of the blunder but it is not known whether any delay in diagnosis resulted in avoidable death.

It is believed around 300,000 women who were impacted by this failure are still alive and in their 70s.

NicK Ferrari asked a senior Public Health England executive again and again to admit that they failed on breast cancer screenings.

Laura, who represented many of disgraced breast surgeon Ian Paterson's victims added: "It is crucial that those affected are told immediately and that they are screened as soon as possible to limit the undoubted worry and suffering they are now dealing with".

Hunt has now ordered an independent review into the programme, which will include examining the processes and IT systems in place.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt told Parliament that women aged between 67 and 70 were affected, but Sky News understands those not invited were overwhelmingly aged 70 at the time they were due to be scanned.

It said, "The fault has now been identified and fixed and women who did not receive their final routine invitation and are registered with a GP are being contacted and offered the opportunity to have a catch up screen".

Letters will be sent out women to notify them of missed screenings over the next few months.

Mahindra Rise, an Indian multinational auto manufacturing company has taken an initiative to create awareness amongst women in rural India against the Breast Cancer disease.

There are women who may have died and the grief it caused their loved ones, and there are the women who may have avoided gruelling treatment. Women stop receiving letters after that screening.

Since 2009 women aged 68-71 were not invited for their final screening appointment.

Staff from two agencies, NHS Digital and Public Health England, have been working through data sets to try and establish the scale of the error.

Women from 65 screening centres across England were randomly selected for the trial, with half of those in the older group invited to be screened beyond their 70th birthday, and the other half unscreened.

It's a "colossal system failure", she said.

"As usual, all women should continue to be aware of any changes to their breasts and if they have any concerns then they should see their GP".

"I don't know about whether she could have been saved, but I think she would have lived longer", he told The Telegraph.

But Mr Hunt said those estimates came with caveats as it was based on on "statistical modelling rather than patient reviews".
