Men Arrested At Starbucks Settle With City For $200K Mentoring Program

A spokesman for Philadelphia said the $200,000 pledge announced Wednesday would be spent on a pilot program for high school students who want to become entrepreneurs, and city officials will work with Mr. Robinson and Mr. Nelson to develop a grant committee.

In addition, as part of the settlement, the two men will have a chance to share their thoughts with former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, whose part of the team crafting the curriculum for that afternoon training session, Starbucks said.

Funds for the $200,000 program will come from the city's Finance Department budget, Dunn said.

Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson were offered the opportunity to complete their undergraduate degrees at the university through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, the coffee chain said in a press release Wednesday.

The agreement between the parties stems from the arrest of Robinson and Nelson at a Starbucks store in Philadelphia and includes a confidential financial settlement as well as a commitment to continued listening and dialogue between the parties as a means toward developing specific actions and opportunities.

That is exactly what they asked if they approached town officers and consented never to submit a lawsuit from Philadelphia or its own employees after they were arrested in a episode that sparked widespread criticism of both Starbucks and also the police. The men were with police for eight hours.

Even the arrests motivated a #BoycottStarbucks effort and protests at the retail store.

They were led away in handcuffs and accused of trespassing after the manager called police, saying the men refused to buy anything or leave.

Yesterday, Starbucks chief executive Kevin Johnson went to Philadelphia to apologise personally to the men and reveal the settlement deal.

"I am pleased to have resolved the potential claims against the city in this productive manner", Mayor Jim Kenney said.

The worldwide coffee company will also give the men an opportunity to complete their bachelor's degrees with a fully funded scholarship through a Starbucks partnership with Arizona State University.

Starbucks has since apologised and sent almost 175,000 employees for racial-bias training.

"I want to thank Donte and Rashon for their willingness to reconcile", Johnson said in the statement. "Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to fix and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be".
