China congratulates North Korea's Kim on reducing tensions

In a report in Army Times, an expert said the plan to remove troops would be "devastating" to South Korea and also other us allies.

But Chung-in's article drew a swift rebuke from South Korea's presidential Blue House, which said that USA forces would stay, regardless of whether a peace treaty is signed.

Trump isn't the only official who's suggested it's time to rethink the US presence in South Korea.

South Korea on Friday denied the Times' report, saying a "key" official of the U.S. National Security Council told the country's national security chief, Chung Eui-yong, that the news was false, Bloomberg and Reuters reported.

President Donald Trump's latest push coincides with tense negotiations with South Korea over how to share the cost of the US military force.

In the past, Trump has questioned the need to keep more than 28,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

Word of Trump's plans follows a South Korean official's statement in which he suggested a potential peace treaty on the Korean Peninsula could render the current troops levels unnecessary. Under an agreement that expires at the end of 2018, South Korea pays about half the cost of the upkeep of the soldiers, more than $800 million a year.

On the rationale for drawing down USA troops in the region, Trump previously cited what he called "a very big trade deficit" with the South, and claimed "our allies care about themselves".

North Korea has released three US citizens who had been held prisoner by the communist dictatorship, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing a South Korean activist who lobbies for the release of detainees.

A U.S. State Department spokeswoman said she could not confirm the reports.

While Kim has long insisted that USA troops leave the peninsula, and railed against the annual U.S.

But Trump's meeting with Kim injects an unpredictable new element.

"But from the perspective of the U.S". The comment came after a prominent adviser to President Moon Jae-in wrote that it would be "difficult to justify" the presence of US forces were the conflict with Kim to end. "It will be hard to justify their continuing presence". "South Korea alliance, it would represent a major retrenchment", Cha said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in rejected the idea on Wednesday. Could it be that Trump isn't the master negotiator he claims he is?
