Excitement builds as first 'US Embassy' road signs go up in Jerusalem

"I thank President Trump for making this historic moment come to fruition".

The White House has announced an official delegation to the USA embassy opening, to be led by Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan and attended by White House advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

"As Washington pursues a policy of encouragement of worldwide anarchy and disregard for organizations and global law, we call upon all diplomatic corps, civil society organizations, and religious authorities to boycott the inauguration ceremony of the USA embassy in Jerusalem, lest they lend legitimacy to an illegal decision and to continued Israeli policies of occupation, colonization, and annexation", Erekat said in an official statement. The delegation will be led by Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.

Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan will lead the group, which also includes Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Jason Greenblatt, special representative for worldwide negotiations, the White House said. "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people - and the world is beginning to recognize this fact".

According to a White House statement, the opening ceremony will be on May 14.

Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordanian control in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.

Barkat placed the first signs on Monday in the southern Jerusalem neighborhood where the embassy is to be located.

The city has been designated as "occupied" under worldwide law since the 1967 Arab War, which Palestinians want as the capital of their future state. "Jerusalem is our capital", she said.

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the USA move.

Trump said last week that he "may" go to Jerusalem for the opening himself.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in April "at least half a dozen" countries were now "seriously discussing" following the USA lead, though he did not identify them.
