Custom routines for Google Assistant are going live

Company CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google has been working on newer and more life-like version of its spoken AI that features natural voice that is "closer to how humans speak". Google also announced 6 new voices for Google Assistant.

These new voices only work with English for now. Moreover, it can speak in new voices or listen for continuous questions.

Lastly, Google also announced six new voices coming to the Assistant, and the voice of John Legend will be available later this year. Instead, the assistant will understand when you're talking to it, versus someone else. As you type, Smart Compose pops up suggestions about what you might want to write next - similar to Google autocomplete.

With the launch of Custom Routines, Google is replacing the Shortcut feature.

Multiple ActionsA key part of having a natural conversation is being able to ask about many things at once.

Go to "Google Assistant Settings". For parents concerned about their kids rudely bossing the Assistant around, the "Pretty Please" feature powered by Family Link being introduced later this year will offer positive reinforcement to children who ask for things nicely, and say "please" and "thank you", to encourage polite conversation.

An upgraded "Time Spent" initiative helps you keep track of (and limit) how much time you spent using various apps, an effort to help you feel the "joy of missing out" - you know, JOMO.

"Hey Google, order my usual from Starbucks." and the Assistant will fire up the Starbucks app, order your usual, then give you a confirmation and pickup time.

Today's smart home speakers and virtual assistant apps may be high-tech wonders that can turn on the lights, start our cars, book our appointments and make our calls - but they can also reinforce the dated stereotype of a subservient woman catering to a user's every whim. Those seven devices are: air conditioning units, air purifiers, coffee makers, fans, kettles, ovens, and sprinklers.

Google stated that these features would be rolling out in the next few months and with the smart speaker battle just heating up in India, it remains to be seen which assistant emerges victorious.

Instagram users may soon gain access to a "Mute" option along with a slew of other features.
