Palestinian shot dead by Israeli forces during Gaza protests

It has seen tent encampments spring up at several locations near the Israeli-imposed restricted zone along the 40-kilometer (25-mile) border fence and is scheduled to culminate on May 15, when Palestinians mark Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, commemorating their displacement 70 years ago. Many carried signs reading "Palestinian belongs to the Palestinians" and "Al-Quds belongs to Muslims".

At least 41 protesters have been killed by Israel fire since the protests began in late March - with some estimates going as high as 53.

Dozens of Palestinian demonstrators on Friday broke into the Gaza side of the terminal - the main conduit for goods in and out of the territory - setting a pipeline that delivers gas from Israel alight, torching a goods conveyor belt and damaging a fuel pipe.

A second senior administration official emphasized that the violence along Israel's border by Gaza is chiefly being perpetuated by Hamas terrorists seeking to further inflame regional tensions.

Israel has said it will prevent any border breach and has stuck to its open-fire policies, such as targeting "main instigators" and those approaching the fence, despite growing global criticism.

"Medical ethics and the policies of Israel's rescue and health organizations obligate us to provide treatment to the wounded, regardless of their actions before they were injured".

A Palestinian protester uses a slingshot to hurl stones towards Israeli security forces during clashes along the Israel-Gaza border, 11-05-2018.

"This decision is not merely a reversal in United States policy as it relates to Jerusalem, but the timing can only be understood by Palestinians as a deliberate and emphatic attempt to add insult to injury, not by the Israelis, but by the Americans who seek to claim the role of mediator between the Israelis and Palestinians", he said.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven out of what is now Israel.

This is the seventh straight week that Palestinians have participated in the "March of Return" along the border fence with Israel. The Palestinian who was killed had tried to cross the border fence into Israel. Egypt also restricts movement in and out of Gaza.

Most of the deaths have resulted from the Israeli army firing upon Palestinians who approach the border fence. Israel's position has generally been that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.
