Gina Haspel Now Says CIA Shouldn't Have Conducted Its Interrogation Program

Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Haspel said outright that CIA should not have used such methods, even if they were deemed legal.

Haspel appears to have a lock on confirmation, with a vote in the Intelligence Committee expected for Wednesday.

"It's one thing to vote [when] John McCain is in Sedona, it's another thing to look him in the eye and tell him you're not going to vote with him", said Senator Angus King, an independent from ME who plans to vote against Haspel, told the Globe.

"The United States must send a message to the world that we hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies".

The Justice Department has provided to the Intelligence Committee the executive summary of a classified report by Durham laying out his factual findings and legal analysis, and several senators of both parties have asked the department to make that available to the full Senate as well.

In a taped interview with the Fox host, Cheney applauded the nomination of Gina Haspel to head the Central Intelligence Agency while admitting that he didn't know her personally, despite the fact that she helped oversee the black ops program that interrogated prisoners after the 9/11 attack.

Haspel's comments went beyond her testimony at her confirmation hearing last week, when she repeatedly refused to disavow techniques such as waterboarding as immoral or ineffective.

She needs only 50 votes but Republicans enjoy just a slim 51-49 majority in the chamber.

Though Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is urging the Senate to reject Haspel, her confirmation seems likely now that two red-state Democrats have offered their support: Sens.

There are valid questions that have been raised regarding the Acting Director's record, and I have been frank with Ms. Haspel that I wish she had been more open with the American public during this process.

Warner has not yet said whether he will support Haspel's nomination. John McCain of Arizona is absent.

Haspel's reluctance to condemn the interrogation techniques spurred Republican Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) and Joe Donnelly (IN). "I believed in it", Cheney said. A committee vote is expected Wednesday.
