Authorities Investigate California Explosion as Intentional

The blast at the two-storey building in Aliso Viejo, south of Los Angeles, also injured two people.

A USA official says a deadly explosion at a Southern California office building is being investigated as an intentional act and investigators believe the blast may have come from a package.

But police have not confirmed this and they say no device was found.

He said authorities believe the explosion came from inside the building, since the doors and windows on the bottom floor were "blown out", according to The Register.

The sheriff's department is partnering with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who will assist the investigation.

Officials originally believed the explosion was caused by a vehicle crashing into the building, but Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carrie Braun said no auto was involved and the department was investigating how the explosion occurred. Authorities say one person is dead and several others have injuries.

The explosion was reported before 1:25 p.m. on the first floor of a two-story office building, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) told CBS Los Angeles.

Mary McWilliams told The Register that she arrived for an appointment to find smoke surrounding the area and auto alarms going off.

There were unconfirmed initial witness reports that the blast may have been a gas explosion, but Bommarito said it is rare for such gas-fueled blast to occur in a commercial building.

McWilliams said she saw two burned women staggering out of the building, covered in ash and soot.

A third person suffered smoke inhalation, fire officials said. Other people could be seen wheeling cribs down the street as the area was evacuated. The other woman was bleeding from her head.

They said they were not actively looking for any suspects.

The county's bomb squad and a hazmat team are preparing to search the building where the explosion occurred.
