Laurel or Yanny? What we heard from the experts

"Oh wow, I heard Laurel, you heard Laurel that time, I did, I swear this morning I heard Yanny".

The debate began on Reddit and expanded throughout social media. She said she heard laurel.

"I did not create Yanny vs. Laurel", she said. But for a moment, discovering there was no observable rhyme or reason to why you heard something that a sizeable chunk of the internet didn't was unsettling.

Then, he said, you have to take into account the different ways people are listening to this - through mobile phones, headphones, tablets, etc. We also now know from recent research that the superior temporal gyrus is extremely important for hearing pitch. But others have said it's just a simple case of bass versus treble: If you happen to pick up bass tones more, you hear "Laurel".

While the experts theorized, online sleuths were hard at work manipulating the bass, pitch or volume.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, you've probably run into the latest viral trend: "Yanny" vs. "Laurel".

Some speculated, like Keating, that the differences might be related to hearing loss or the age of the listener.

Yet making those adjustments did not change the word for some. He says a person's experiences can help determine what they see or hear. Couple this with all the cultural and linguistic ways we've been trained to hear certain vowels, and you've got a ideal recipe for a little audio illusion.

A nationwide phenomenon is breaking the internet. Dr. Kevin Franck, the audiology director at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, told TIME that the audio clip in this instance forces the brain to decide quickly about what word it hears.
