Cohen said to ask Qatar to pay $1M for Trump insights

US President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen asked the Qatari government for at least $1m in December 2016, according to a report.

Qatar declined the offer, which came a few days before a December 12 meeting that year at Trump Tower between the Persian Gulf state's foreign minister and Michael Flynn, who became Trump's first national security adviser, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Cohen's attempts to sell access were first publicly alleged last week by Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for Stormy Daniels, an adult-film star who was paid $130,000 by Cohen before the election to keep quiet details of an alleged sexual encounter with Trump.

After the payment to Daniels was first revealed by the Wall Street Journal, Cohen acknowledged making the payment himself.

Daniels claims she had an affair with Trump.

A footnote to disclosures submitted Tuesday to the Office of Government Ethics said Cohen had incurred "expenses" on Trump's behalf in 2016 of between $100,001 and $250,000.

The letter by the office to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said that Trump's financial disclosure reports were being provided "because you may find the disclosure relevant to any inquiry you may be pursuing regarding the president's prior report", which was filed in June 2017.

The investigation began last week after Michael Avenatti, an attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, detailed transactions in which large firms with business interests before the USA government transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to Essential Consultants, a company controlled by Cohen.

The New York Times reported television agent Jay Sures talked with executives at the cable news outlets about a program where the pair would square off.

Even still, Cohen contacted high ranking Russian-contact Dmitry Peskov asking for "assistance" in closing the Trump Tower deal.

The hush payment has been a source of controversy for Trump, who initially said on Air Force One that he was unaware of the payment to Clifford before acknowledging its existence in a series of Twitter posts this month.

Novartis has faced public outrage in recent weeks over its payment to Essential Consultants, a company founded by Mr. Cohen in 2016. Among his holdings, he took in $25 million from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. And then second, it would've given a false impression that" Trump knew about the reimbursement if it was disclosed "back in 2017.

The two SARs in question reportedly show transactions totaling about $1 million in bank transfers over the span of about seven months, and some $2 million in activity during a three-month period ending in September 2017. The Office of Government Ethics said the president's report is under review. Neither attended the closed-door session, and "I stood outside in the hall", Rumaihi said, as the delegation went in.
