FBI Has Suspect in Damaging CIA Leak of Spying Code

The breach marked one of the worst national security leaks since former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden provided batches of sensitive documents from the agency to the news media in 2013. His lawyers maintain he had nothing to do with the Vault 7 leaks, and he has not been charged with any crimes related to the case.

Schulte's apartment was raided a year ago for his computer and notes, but authorities came up empty-handed as far as smoking gun evidence of leaking "Vault 7".

Prosecutors said Schulte used Tor at his apartment but didn't provide evidence to suggest he did so in order to disclose classified information. "They conducted a number of search warrants on the defendant's residence". He said that the investigation was continuing, and that it involved in part how Tor, software that allows anonymous communication on the internet, "was used in transmitting classified information".

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Schulte is a suspect in the leak, according to public court documents.

Schulte's father, Roger, said he was scared to death.

Jacob Kaplan, Schulte's attorney at the January hearing, told the court that "the government had full access to his computers and his phone, and they found the child pornography in this case, but what they didn't find was any connection to the WikiLeaks investigation".

He has plead not guilty to the charges.

Government prosecutors say Joshua Adam Schulte remains a target of an ongoing investigation into the theft of the tools that were used by the agency to spy overseas. The elder Mr. Schulte said that his son was in college when he built the server later found to contain child pornography, and that he "had so many people accessing it he didn't care what people put on it".

Joshua Schulte, 29, has been accused of handing over thousands of stolen files to the anti-secrecy website Wikileaks. He was in the CIA for the development of a computer code to the intelligence of foreign adversaries.

At the time of the leak, people who had worked with that group said that suspicion had mainly focused on contractors, not full-time Central Intelligence Agency employees such as Schulte.

Schulte is now jailed on child pornography charges.

The CIA declined to comment.

Schulte said he reported security vulnerabilities and "incompetent management and bureaucracy" at the CIA to his superior, the inspector general and a House intelligence committee staff member before leaving the CIA in 2016.

He left to work in the private sector in 2016, according to his LinkedIn page.

He said the complaints made him appear to be a disgruntled employee and a planned vacation to Mexico with his brother gave the impression he was trying to flee the country.

He also said that because of 'unfortunate circumstances the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgement that (he) was guilty of the leaks and targeted (him)'.
