Manchester United close to completing the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred

"You know that we had negotiations with Manchester City this winter and there was an official offer, a very big figure".

Signed from worldwide for €15M in 2013 where he was already twice a Campeonato Gaucho champion the classy left-footer has been a regular in the Shakhtar side ever since, helping them to two league titles, two domestic cups and three Super Cups.

The Red Devils look set to beat derby rivals Man City to the Brazilian's signature, as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his midfield ahead of next season. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, United will pay 50 million euros for the 25 year old.

Cape Town - Brazilian star Fred has revealed that Manchester United have put in a strong bid to prise him away from his current club Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainian club wanted £50m for Fred and were keen to get United involved in a bidding war to drive up the price even higher.

A proper press-resistor is lacking in United's midfield options, with Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay lacking mobility, Paul Pogba better deployed further up the pitch, and Ander Herrera a more effective defensive weapon than a transitional weapon.

Despite putting pen to paper on a new five-year deal with the Ukrainian outfit at the turn of the year, the Brazilian has always been linked with a move to the Premier League and it seems that he will be the first of Mourinho's summer signings.

Fred himself confirmed Mourinho's interest recently by saying his agents were contacted after a January move to Manchester City collapsed.
