Attack On Interior Ministry Ends After Eight Gunmen Killed

Three officers were killed, including the district's well-regarded police chief, Khan Agha, and four others were wounded, said Shahpoor Ahmadzai, the spokesman for the Logar police.

The US, meanwhile, confirmed strikes against the insurgents in Helmand province with "more than 50 casualties".

The attack on a meeting of commanders in the district of Musa Qala in Helmand, one of the heartlands of the Taliban insurgency, was a significant blow to the insurgents, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for USA forces in Afghanistan.

Witnesses said the assailants arrived in an SUV, a type of vehicle mostly used by Afghan authorities and USA -led troops in the country.

Some elements of the Taliban in Afghanistan are showing interest in peace talks, the top USA commander in Kabul said Wednesday, citing "off stage" contacts involving what he described as mid- and high-level leaders of the insurgency.

A week before that, 60 people were killed and more than 100 wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a voter registration center in the city.

No group immediately asserted responsibility for the strike, which occurred three weeks after a group of Taliban fighters and sympathizers of the Islamic State separately staged two complex attacks on two police stations in Kabul.

Initial findings by the ministry said six attackers were killed.

There was no breach of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation compound, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for the coalition in Kabul.

Two other attacks occurred elsewhere in Afghanistan on Wednesday. A suicide vehicle bomb was set off at the gates before three gunmen in suicide vests stormed the compound.

In Kabul, the gunmen who attacked the Interior Ministry were either shot dead by police or died when they detonated their explosives, Danesh said. Among the wounded were two children, the media reported.

On Tuesday, Taliban fighters overran the center of Chora district in the southern province of Uruzgan.

On Wednesday, Task Force Southwest announced U.S. Forces-Afghanistan conducted a series of strikes on the Taliban over a 10-day period that resulted in the deaths of more than 70 senior Taliban leaders. Sources also said police have not handed over the armored vehicles, used by the attackers, to the NDS for investigation.
