Trump still sees June 12 Singapore summit with Kim

A North Korean delegation led by another of Kim Jong Un's trusted aides, Kim Chang Son, flew to Singapore on Monday night for talks with United States officials to discuss logistical issues for the summit. "It will happen!" Trump added.

Preparations for the summit is in full swing, White House confirmed.

A top North Korean official headed to NY on Wednesday for talks aimed at salvaging a summit between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump on the future of Kim's nuclear programme, in the North's highest-level mission to the United States in 18 years.

"Sending such an experienced and professional team signals that the Trump administration is getting serious about the specifics of an agreement", said Abraham Denmark, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for East Asia.

"Meetings are now taking place concerning Summit, and more", Trump said in a Twitter posting that misspelled the envoy's name.

After the second meeting this month, Pompeo returned to Washington with three Americans who had been detained in North Korea.

Kim will be the first senior North Korean official to visit the United States in nearly 20 years.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has asked veteran American diplomat Sung Kim to handle pre-summit negotiations. Pentagon official Randall Schriver is also in Seoul now, the Post said.

Led by Sung Kim, the United States ambassador to the Philippines and former U.S. ambassador to Seoul, the USA officials first met their counterparts including Choe Son-hui, North Korea's vice foreign minister, on Sunday.

Moon and Kim met on the South Korean side of Panmunjom on April 27, agreeing to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the change of the current armistice agreement into a peace treaty.

Trump and Abe "affirmed the shared imperative of achieving the complete and permanent dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missile programs", the White House said in a statement.

The South Korean government also said Friday that Seoul planned to continue diplomatic efforts to maintain a dialogue momentum between the DPRK and the United States.

North Korea has tested dozens of missiles of various types in the past two years, including one launch of its largest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile, which is theoretically capable of hitting anywhere in the United States, on November 29.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's de facto chief of staff, Kim Chang Son, meanwhile, flew to Singapore via Beijing late on Monday, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

Asian shares mostly gained on signs the United States and North Korea were still working towards holding a summit. They allowed Moon to push for a U.S.

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Trump said at the White House.

In principle, Kim is prohibited from traveling to the US under Washington's sanctions against Pyongyang. "Xi has just had two summits with North Korea, relations with South Korea are improving, and at least right now the picture on US-China trade isn't as bad as it might have been".

The officials may discuss bridging the gap between Washington and Pyongyang on what a deal on the North's nuclear weapons would look like.

Trump briefly scrapped the talks last week, citing "open hostility" from the North, but since then both sides have dialled down the rhetoric and the process appears to be back on track.

The talks show that planning for the unprecedented summit, initially scheduled for June 12, is moving ahead after Mr Trump called it off last week in a letter to the North's leader, Mr Kim.
