Serena Williams cries in 'Being Serena' over breastfeeding

Serena Williams cries in 'Being Serena' over breastfeeding

Thankfully, she's no longer striving for perfection but hoping "to be the best mom I can be".

Serena Williams made an eye-catching return to the grand slam scene with victory over Kristyna Pliskova in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday. The opening set went with serve and eventually to a tie-break in which Williams bounced back from 3-0 down to clinch it.

But as she makes her Grand Slam comeback at the French Open following the birth of her daughter Alexis Olympia last September, it was clear that her legacy remains incomplete.

As a result of that embolism, her coughing also popped open her c-section wound - at which point they also found a large hematoma (also clotted blood) in her abdomen. I always wanted to be a superhero, and it's kind of my way of being a superhero. She moved up to No. 451 with the win.

Serena Williams is the GOAT - an acronym for the "Greatest OF All Time", it is usually a term reserved for male athletes.

Serena recently admitted that she nearly died delivering Olympia as she had to undergo an emergency caesarean section but experienced life-threatening complications, which resulted in surgery to prevent blood clots travelling to her lungs.

It is clear Williams has learned to handle the criticisms and has even embraced her strong and muscular body. Getting everything to work out is no easy feat for someone in Williams' position and it is the reason why in the past 38 years Belgian Kim Clijsters is the only mother to win Grand Slam titles - three of her four majors - after a maternity break.

Williams will arm her weapons for battle on Thursday when she takes on Ashleigh Barty in the round of 64 at Roland-Garros.

"I fell like a warrior princess kind, a queen from Wakanda", the 36-year-old said, referencing the blockbuster Black Panther movie from Marvel.

Czech world number 70 Pliskova questioned the legality of the Williams outfit when she talked with Czech media after the first round match. But the good news is I feel like I'm definitely going to get there.

The 23-time grand slam victor revealed the outfit was as much about functionality as style.

Whatever happens over the next two weeks, Williams insists her family priorities have eased the expectations on her as a player. "The connection that it gives me to Olympia, it's been one of the most magical things I've ever experienced".
