Alice Marie Johnson 'thankful' to Trump for commuting sentence

Johnson, who had been serving a mandatory life sentence plus 25 years for a nonviolent drug offense, also had a plea for the president to review more cases like hers.

Johnson said she has not heard directly from the White House but she'd like to tell Trump how grateful she is for having her released - for herself and her family.

Mic interviewed Johnson from prison previous year.

"And this is not just a publicity thing for her, Kim told me that when she left that White House meeting, that no matter how this turns out, that she would never stop fighting for me until I got home".

Trump commuted Johnson's life sentence on Wednesday, following Kardashian's high-profile campaign.

"I don't believe that there should be a non-violent offender like myself sentenced to life", she said.

In an interview Thursday night with Fox News' Martha MacCallum on "The Story", Johnson expressed her gratitude for Trump's decision the day before to commute her sentence.

Administration officials say the president is not only contemplating possible pardons - which wipes out a conviction - but also commutations, which leave the conviction intact and on the person's record while reducing the punishment.

"Telling her for the first time and hearing her screams while crying together is a moment I will never forget", Kim K tweeted, saying it "will forever be one of my best memories".

She was convicted on charges of attempted possession of drugs and money-laundering in Tennessee. "I feel like my life is starting over again.' She called Kardashian an "angel" and thanked the president 'for giving me another chance at life and restoring me to my family".

Barnett, one of Johnson's attorneys, said in a statement, "Justice has been served today, and it's long overdue". "When you see my face, you see so many other faces that I represent".

Kardashian West announced the "BEST NEWS EVER!".

Last week, Kardashian's meeting with Trump in the Oval Office was widely mocked on social media. "I didn't even know life was on the table until after the trial", said Johnson.
