Grandmother caught transporting children in dog kennels

Leimome Cheeks of Memphis, Tennessee, is behind bars after a video surfaced on Twitter shows her letting her children out of dog kennels after locking them in the trunk of her auto.

Cheeks, 62 has been charged with two counts of child endangerment. And indeed, it was around 95 degrees on the day that the children were seen in the pet kennels.

Leimome Cheeks was apprehended by police after the children were spotted on Elvis Presley Boulevard, in Memphis, yesterday afternoon, Fox 17 News reports.

Video surfaced after a concerned citizen who saw the unfolding incident took it upon themselves to film the children getting out of the kennels for evidence in case police didn't show up in time. Neighbors are shocked. They say Leimome Cheeks is a very nice woman and they can't believe she did something like this.

Police say she admitted to driving from Whitehaven to Collierville with her 8-and 9-year-old grandchildren sitting in kennels in the back of her truck. According to a police affidavit, the children-aged seven and eight-said there was no room left in the vehicle, so they were told to sit inside the kennels. I only met her like once maybe twice.

Skylarr Blake, who lives a few doors down from Cheeks, said he couldn't imagine her doing such a thing. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", Eugene Richmond said.

An investigation has been launched by Children Services and Memphis Police.

Arresting officers noted there being no air conditioning vents in the back of the vehicle with the children telling police they became hot.

The footage shows Cheeks open the cage for one of the children, seen wearing turquoise leggings and a blue T-shirt.
