Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Will my access to Netflix or other sites slow down? However, you might not see any immediate changes today.

Experts warn a non-neutral net creates an unfair playing field between the mammoth internet companies that can afford to "pay to play" versus start-ups and smaller businesses. Now Comcast Cable president Dave Watson posted a blog post today to reconfirm Comcast's "committed to an open internet".

The recent FCC's staunch opposition to net neutrality has been met with waves of public backlash.

Happening today: Rules that prevented internet providers (like Comcast) from slowing or speeding up service to some sites (like Netflix) are no longer in effect. While the FCC is removing itself from net neutrality regulation, the Federal Trade Commission can try to punish ISPs that make net neutrality promises and fail to keep them.

Those last two should stick out to you, as they have been key points in the debates surrounding net neutrality rules.

"Those "fast lanes" will put those who won't or can not pay in the slow lane, making the internet look a lot like cable TV", Sohn says.

The agency said the regulations were unnecessary and unhelpful, but critics counter that internet service providers will now have too much control over the flow of online content. "Their wisest course of action will be to eliminate net neutrality like a slow drip over time in the hope that consumers won't notice and will stop caring".

ISPs have said they won't block or throttle legal websites, though they've left open the potential for charging more for some data delivery. In other words, net neutrality is dead, folks. So the carriers are going to look for greater opportunities to diversify their packages, to expand what they offer you. And a fourth provision, a "general conduct" standard, gave the FCC the ability to investigate broadband practices it believed could be problematic.

With the FCC's vote to end net neutrality in December, which went into effect Monday, ISPs have been given sweeping powers to act as gatekeepers to the internet.

Do the states have any say about this?

. More than 20 states have sued the FCC, and several governors have passed executive orders requiring ISPs doing business with their states to uphold net neutrality.

As of late May, 29 state legislatures had introduced bills meant to ensure net neutrality, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The 2016 election, with its broad abstention by the working class amid widespread hostility to Hillary Clinton, the favored candidate of Wall Street, and the subsequent strike movement by teachers independently of the unions, has made clear to the ruling elite that the imposition of internet censorship is necessary for the defense of its domination of society. Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality. The decision comes despite efforts by members of Congress, state officials, tech companies, and advocacy groups who have fought to reverse the agency's decision for months.
