PM Jacinda Ardern leaves hospital with 'Neve Te Aroha'

At almost three days old the tiny tot will make her first public appearance at 11am cradled in mother Jacinda Ardern's arms with proud dad Clarke Gayford.

Her tiny daughter was wrapped in a cosy blanket and wearing a green knitted beanie to keep her warm. She was previously a reporter at The Canberra Times.

"We're not placing any great expectations on this little baby, except happiness and love", she said.

In the video, Ardern takes a few minutes to tell the story behind their daughter's name, Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford, as well as to thank staff at the hospital.

Ardern said like many parents she and Gayford had struggled to settle on a name before the birth and had a shortlist prepared.

Niamh, as it is traditionally spelled, is a name from old Irish mythology, meaning radiance or brightness, but the new parents chose to go with the simpler, modern spelling to avoid a lifetime of people tripping up over it.

Ardern took office in October 2017 and announced her pregnancy in January 2018.

Te Aroha is a rural town in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island, and is also the name of a Maori song about love and peace.

The couple joked that they were feeling well but "sleep-deprived". Jacinda Ardern and her spouse live demonstrating this is lovely to see, and may this freedom extend to more of us.

"I do not want to create a false impression that all women should be super-human or superwomen", Ardern said recently.

All the presents for baby Neve would be passed on to another family once they had been used, Ms Ardern said. Many hope the 37-year-old will become a role model for combining motherhood with political leadership.

She is thought to be the second elected leader in modern history who has given brith while holding office.

Her deputy Winston Peters is now acting prime minister, although Ardern will continue to be consulted on significant issues.

We all divide our time, choose between ambitions and obligations, creative joys, family-time and workplace climbs.

"Welcome to our village wee one", she captioned the photo.

"Feeling very lucky to have a healthy baby girl that arrived at 4.45pm weighing 3.31kg (7.3lb)". "We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital".

Since the birth on Thursday, Ms Ardern has been inundated with messages and gifts from world leaders, including the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have sent a handwritten note saying they look forward to meeting later in the year.
